Ilish Bhapa

Tender Bengali hilsa fish steamed in a mustard-coconut paste.

Ingredients

  • hilsa fish250 g
  • black mustard seeds20 g
  • yellow mustard seeds20 g
  • green chili pepper8 pcs
  • coconut40 g
  • yogurt25 g
  • sugar0.25 tsp
  • turmeric0.5 tsp
  • salt1 to taste
  • mustard oil20 g
  • water1000 ml
  • rice600 g

Instructions

Cut the hilsa into 4 pieces about 3 cm thick, rinse and pat dry.

Cover the black and yellow mustard seeds with water and leave for 2 hours.

Drain the mustard seeds and grind them with half the green chili and salt.

Mix in the coconut, yogurt, sugar, turmeric and mustard oil, then coat the fish.

Transfer the fish to a container, add the remaining chili and marinate for 15 minutes.

Pour water into a pot, set a stand and the container inside.

Bring the water to a boil and steam for 15 minutes.

Let rest for 5 minutes and serve with rice.
