Chicken Paprikash
Tender chicken thighs braised in a spicy sour cream and paprika sauce with tomatoes and bell peppers – a classic Hungarian dish traditionally served with homemade noodles or dumplings.
Ingredients
- chicken thighs800 g
- onion2 pcs
- garlic2 cloves
- sweet paprika2 tbsp
- tomato1 pcs
- bell pepper1 pcs
- sour cream200 g
- chicken broth250 ml
- flour1 tbsp
- oil2 tbsp
- salt1 to taste
- black pepper (ground)1 to taste
Instructions
Season the chicken thighs with salt and pepper, and sear in hot oil until golden brown on both sides (3-4 minutes per side), then transfer to a plate.
In the same pot, sauté the chopped onion for 6-7 minutes until soft, add the minced garlic and cook for another 1 minute.
Remove the pot from the heat, add the sweet paprika and stir quickly for 20-30 seconds so it doesn't burn.
Return to the heat, add the chopped tomato, bell pepper, chicken stock and the seared chicken; cover with a lid and simmer over medium-low heat for 30-35 minutes until the chicken is tender.
Remove the chicken from the pot. Mix the sour cream with flour until smooth, thin it out with a few spoonfuls of the hot sauce, then pour the mixture back into the pot in a thin stream, stirring constantly.
Return the chicken to the sauce and heat through for 3-5 minutes over low heat, without letting it boil, so the sour cream doesn't curdle.
Serve the chicken paprikash hot with homemade noodles, dumplings (nokedli) or rice.
