- Wheat flour300 g
- Buttermilk or kefir350 ml
- Baking soda1 tsp
- Salt1 to taste
- Sugar1 tsp

Preheat the oven to 200°C and dust a baking tray with flour.

In a bowl, mix the flour, baking soda, salt, and a little sugar if using.

Pour in the buttermilk or kefir and mix quickly just until a soft dough forms; do not knead heavily.

Shape into a round loaf, place on the tray, and cut a deep cross on top.

Bake for 35–40 minutes until well browned and hollow-sounding when tapped underneath.

Cool on a rack and serve with butter, soup, or stew.
